The colored people have re daemed themselves voting for Knight, Nash, Pitman and Pennington. Never before have tbey showed so much independence and disregard of party. No, 1 township gives the follow ing majorities and pluralities for Democrats: Nash 470 Pennington 250 Pittman 32 Speight 26 In 1888 the repnblican majority was over 200. Id township No. 2, Nash, Knight and Pennington carried everything easily; Ditto Whitakers and Sparta townships. At this wriring the indications point to the election of the legisla tive ticket; Speight, Brake and Bridg ers by a small plurality As to the votes in this county on the judicial and congressional tick ets they will probably ahow; judicial about 700 republican majority, con gressiocal about 800. Three cheers for Edgecombe De mocracy ! She's all right. Nash Grasb. Sound tbe Tocsin. The Democratic victory in Edge combe is even more complete than was anticipated. "Witty the excep tion of Bab f r coronet and Pender for surveyor the entire ticket is elect ed by majorities and pluralities rang ing from 2,700 for Nash to about forty for Pittman fori Register of Deeds. It is a glorious victory and the Southern cb, fair to all, pays its re spects and makes its bow to the disQ criminating jadgment of the colored man. Of his breaking! bis thraldom, exercising his own judgment more 1 particular attention will be given in another issue. I In other States the Democracy has done well. A solid Congress delegation from Virginia, same for Missouri, New York has twenty Democrats to fifteen republicans Indiana goes Demo cratic by 20,000. And in the elec tion Tuesday many things were re vealed. ' The colored people in all sections of the county went to the po'ta, worked nd voted fi.r Democratic candidates in prefrtnee to the hungry greedy political tricksters; and no for such action on tbt-ir part tbey de serve or dit and praise. In previous elections held in thi county tbey fell into lii e when the party whip was flourished and vot d the Httaight out republican ticket This time it was a notable and coinmendaMe exception; not only did tbey endorse and vote for some of tbe Democrats, but they earn estly worked for and supported tbem They deserted the g, o. p. in this county in times of their greatest need and demonstrated to the rad bosses and buyers that tbey were en tirely independent of them, and x ercised their own judgment in cast incr their votes. Tbe colored people in , Edgecombe county would be ten time better off to-day than they are if thvy had always attended to their own busi ness; worked diligently and let the rad politicians and schemers aloue. They are fast realizing how they have been daped and imposed upon in the past y thoe wLo used them only as toolc, and now tbey should be commended for their action. - Chilli ami fever of three years stand log cured by Simmons Liver Regulator. A white man, whose name the reporter was unable to learn, had his hand severely injured in some ma chinery at the oil mill, and Dr. Wynn was called immediately to render as sistance. The latest accounts are that there are heavy Democratic gains all over the county and the next House will assuredly be Democratic. North Carolina has gained one or two Congressmen. In ladies jewelry, we aim to car ry the newest designs in earnings, broaches, lace pins, chains, riDgs &c. A moderate outlay of money, will secure a rare and -pretty present, from Bell, the jeweler. Every thing is favorable to a most substan tial growth of tbe town. This has been a quiet election. Outside of George Lloyd, who was defeated, for the Senate, there has been but little ebullition L'oyd talks about being counted out and if he is he will cause all the negroes to leave here and , tnat sort of rot Thanks to Frank Battle Dr. Speight has 300 plurality and George feels badly. , The attention of those intend ing buying cemetery work is direct ed to the card of John D. Mr. Eudyard Kipling, the new Anglo Indian author, whose popularity is so great in London, waa lately on a visit to this country, and writes as follows about die American girlt "The American girls are pretty very much so with a piquancy, all of their own, impossible to describe as to resist Sweet and comely are the maidens of Devonshire; delicate and of precious eeming those who live in the pleasant places of London; fascinatl for all their demureness the damsels of France, clinging closely to their mothers and with large eyes wondering at the wicked world; excellent in her own place, and :o those who understand her, is the Anglo-Indian 'Spin' in her second sea son; but the girls of America are above and beyond them alL They are clever, they can talk; yea, it is said they can think. Certainly they have an appear ance of so doing which is delightfully deceptive. They are original, and re gard you with unabashed eyes, as a sis ter might look at her brother. They are instructed, too, in the folly and vanity of the male mind, for they have associ ated with boys from (babyhood and can discerningly minister! to both vices or pleasantly snub the possessor. They possess, moreover, a life among them selves, independent of any masculine as sociations. They have societies and clubs and unlimited tea fights where all the guests are girls. They are self pos sessed without parting with any tender ness that is their sex right They under stand. They can take care of themselves. They are superbly independent When you aak them what . makes them so charming they say: 'Ii is because we are better educated than your girls and we are more sensible in regard to men. We have good times all around, but aren't taught to regard every man as a possible husband. Nor is he expected to marry the first girl he calls on regularly.' Yes, they have good times. Their free dom is large and they do not abuse it. They can go driving with young men and receive nods from young men to an extent that would make an English mother wink with horror; and neither driver nor drives have a thought beyond the enjoyment of a good time. "But this freedom of the yourfg girl has its drawbacks. She is I say it with all reluctance irreverent from her forty dollar bonnet to the buckles on her eighteen dollar shoes. She talks flip pantly to her parents. he has a pre scriptive right to the spciesy of the man who arrives. The parents admit it This is sometimes embarrassing, espe cially when you call on a man and his wife for. the sake of information; the one being a merchant of varied knowl edge, the other a woman of the world. In five minutes vow host has vanished. In another five his wife has followed him, and you are Wit alone with a very charming maiden doubtless, but cer tainly not the person you came to see. "The American of wealth is owned by his family. They exploit him for bul lion, and sometimes it seems to me that his lot is a lonely ?. Nothing is too good for an American's daughter. (I speak here of the moneyed classes.) The girls take every gift as a matter of course. And yet tiiey develop greatly when a catastrophe arrives and the man if many millions goe up or goes down. His daughters take to stenography or Eypewriting. I have heard many tales of such heroism from the lips of girls who counted the principals among their friends. " 'KeeWSrtf Wings.
